Groundnut Digger: Getting Timing, Depth and Recovery Right

Dig early and you leave yield in the ground. Dig late and the peg breaks. The window is narrow — reading the crop is how you find it.

Groundnut is the crop where harvest timing costs or earns the most, because the pods you leave behind are invisible until the field is turned again. A digger only helps if it goes in at the right moment, at the right depth.

Read the shell, not the leaves

Leaf colour is a poor guide. Open sampled pods and look at the inside of the shell: when the inner shell shows dark veining on most of your samples, the crop is ready. Sample from several parts of the field, not one corner.

Soil moisture decides pod retention

Slightly moist soil lifts cleanly and pods stay attached to the peg. Dry soil snaps the peg and leaves pods behind. If the soil has gone hard, a light irrigation a day or two before digging often recovers more than it costs.

Set depth by testing, not by assumption

Our single-row digger works at a 15 degree digging angle and is matched to tractors from 17 to 45 HP. Run a short test pass first, check what comes up and what stays down, then adjust. Running too deep wastes tractor power and brings up soil that has to be shaken off later; too shallow and the blade cuts through the pod zone.

Windrow the same day

Lay the lifted crop in neat windrows immediately so drying starts that day. Neat windrows also make hand-picking far faster — which, on most farms, is the largest remaining labour cost in the groundnut harvest.

What mechanised digging is worth

A single-row digger clears four to five acres in a day. The same work by hand takes a large team several days, during the exact window when labour is scarce and expensive. Higher pod recovery, not just labour saving, is where the return comes from.
