Most farms buy a boom sprayer on tank size, then wonder why chemical cost per acre did not fall. Coverage, not capacity, is what decides whether the spray does its job. Three settings control coverage, and all three are adjustable on the machine you already own.
Nozzle spacing and boom span
Our tractor-mounted boom sprayer carries 21 nozzles across a 32 foot boom at 18 inch spacing, available in twin or single nozzle type. That spacing exists so that the spray cones from adjacent nozzles overlap correctly at canopy height. Change the spacing and you change the overlap — usually for the worse.
Boom height is the setting people get wrong
Set the boom so the patterns from neighbouring nozzles just meet at crop canopy height. Too high and you lose chemical to drift, which is money blowing across the boundary. Too low and you leave sprayed stripes with untreated gaps between them — and the pest survives in the gaps.
Calibrate once a season: twenty minutes
Fill with clean water, spray a measured area at your normal working speed and gear, then measure how much water you actually used. Convert to litres per acre. Almost every farm finds the real application rate differs from the assumed one — sometimes by a third.
Once you know the true rate, chemical dosing becomes arithmetic instead of guesswork. This single exercise usually pays for itself in the first spray.

The handguns extend the same machine to orchard, vegetable and boundary spraying where the boom cannot reach — useful on mixed farms that would otherwise need a second sprayer.
Crops it is used on
Wheat, soybean, mustard, cotton, chickpea (chana) and tur (arhar) are the common ones. Consistent coverage means fewer repeat sprays, and fewer repeat sprays is where the saving actually appears.
